A LAN connection the society's mainframe provides for daily download of over 50 MB of account balance data to the system. This data is then available via VULCAN - a 12 port IVR system, to all the society's branches. Previously, in the event of a mainframe failure of some kind, branches were forced to ring in to the Head Office Helpdesk to make manual enquiry via enormous print-outs. Extensive security is provided via passwords and branch ID's along with logging of failed attempts to a daily log file for security audit purposes.
